“How injured runners, Golfers Or Cyclists can get fit  (…and stay Fit), from Frustrating Sports Injuries  that keep you from enjoying sport and being Active”

Sports Physiotherapist, Sports Physio, Sports injury

If you’ve recently picked up a Sports Injury, or if you’ve been suffering with an injury for a while – it can be very tempting to pass it off as “nothing serious” and simply “put up with it” carrying on as best you can.

Or, it can be very easy to get disheartened and end up feeling “stuck”, wondering if you’ll ever be able to get back to playing sport or keeping active like you used to…

If that’s happening to you, you’re not alone – we see people going through this all the time. In fact, we see people living with an injury from sports and exercise in our physio clinics in Garfontein & Loftus, Pretoria, no matter what time of year…

I spent over 4 years working in professional rugby so I’ve just about seen every type of sports injury there is – and know how to help people recover from them. When my rugby-players got injured – we started treatment the NEXT DAY.

That is completely the opposite to the way that most people respond to getting a sports injury, and is why so many people suffering with a sports injury are asking themselves:

“It’s Been Months Now – So Why am I STILL Suffering With an Injury That’s Stopping Me From Being Active and Playing My Favorite Sport?”…

Most people think that when they get a Sports Injury it’ll get better with a few days rest, and that they’ll be able to return to their sport or exercise again, quickly. But then when they go back to exercise again they’re still restricted – sometimes it’s even worse than it was when it first came on. Often when you rest there is little if any pain – but as soon as you start up again, it comes back and no matter how much rest you give it – it doesn’t seem to be improving.

Does that sound like you?

Another scenario we see all the time in our Physio Practice is when people go to the Doctors, and the Doctor tells them they need to take a break, rest, wear a support and “try these painkillers” to “see how it goes” – but then 4 weeks later they end up going back to the same Doctor again because the injury hasn’t got any better, only to be given MORE rest, and ANOTHER prescription of even stronger pills.

The problem is that when it comes to sports injuries – hamstrings, ankle sprains, runner’s knee etc., – complete rest is rarely the best advice.

So maybe you’re confused and frustrated because you’ve been told different things, by different people. Maybe you think you have a back problem – but it’s actually the hip where the problem came from?

Sports injuries can be very confusing because more often than not, where the pain is coming from, isn’t actually the area that needs to be fixed and worked on and if you rest for too long – other parts of the body become just as, if not more problematic!

This confusion over “resting” often leads people to continue to procrastinate and put off making a decision about what to do to help fix their injury and return back to exercise. Worse, many people just end up accepting ‘their days of being active are over’ – as if it’s normal, as if it ‘has’ to be that way.

Is That How You Feel Too?

If you’re currently frustrated and living with a Sports Injury, here’s 7 more reasons why it could be lasting longer than it should:

  1. You thought it would go away on it’s own – but it didn’t
  2. You went to the Doctor who told you to rest, wear a support, and take painkillers – but the pills did nothing to help, and as soon as they wore off, you were left in agonising pain again
  3. A family member, or friend, told you that everyone is more prone to Sports Injuries as they get older, so you just accepted it
  4. You seeked help from other Healthcare Professionals or a Physio in the past, but nothing they said or did seemed to help
  5. You’ve tried using things like heat pads, ice, and sport supports but they’ve done nothing to help make the pain better or return to exercise with ease
  6. You thought it would be a good idea to rest because you were in a lot of pain, but it still irritates you every day.
  7. You decided to get a few “sports massages” hoping that would fix the pain, but all they did was feel a bit ‘painful’ or maybe ‘relaxing’, and didn’t do anything to fix your injury long term…

If any of these have happened to you – we would love to help you by inviting you to book a call to talk with one of our physios at our Practice to find out what can be done to help you. The fact that you’ve tried any or all of these things already is actually a GOOD THING because when you know what doesn’t work – you are closer to finding the thing that does!

Click the link below to book a call with us if you would like to get some solid advice given to you over the phone. The phone call is complimentary and there is no obligation to book any appointments with us after the call is over. Our goal is to help you make the right decision about what to do next for the best.

Well, here’s 4 things you can do:

Sport injury treatemnt, Sports injury Physio
  1. First off, you need to make a decision about getting help. So many people procrastinate for so long, thinking that the pain will ‘just go away with time’, but then 6 months down the line they’re still putting up with it, and nothing’s changed… Or it gets worse and they’re still sitting out from playing sport, or exercise completely
  2. Next, do the RIGHT exercises – one of the best things to help you recover quickly and safely from an injury is to do the right series of progressed exercises – the right exercises given to you by a Physiotherapist will help reduce pain, and allow you to move freely and return to sport again quick – and make sure that the problems don’t come back any time soon.
  3. Avoid “too much rest” – while rest is an important part of the recovery process, too much rest won’t do anything to help you recover quick. Many people believe that recovery means total rest from exercise. But in order for an injury to recover, blood flow is needed which rest prevents. It would really help if you were given appropriate recovery & strengthening exercises to heal your injury, alongside hands-on treatment, to get you active and healthy again quickly as possible.
  4. Get real, “hands-on” Physio – Physio is proven to help people with Sports Injuries. In fact at Cilliers & Swart Physio we help people recover from Sports Injuries all year round. If your injury is stopping you from playing sport and keeping active, if it’s affecting your job, or if it threatens your independence and gets in the way of spending quality time with family and friends – Physiotherapy can help get you back to living the life you deserve as quickly as possible.

Navigating recovery after a sports injury requires more than patience; it demands a clinical strategy that prioritises functional restoration. At the intersection of high-level performance and biological healing, modern sports medicine provides the essential framework for athletes to rebuild their bodies with precision. Effective sports injury treatment is no longer about passive waiting but a proactive journey of identifying mechanical failures and correcting them through evidence-based rehabilitation. By focusing on the “why” behind the pain, physiotherapy ensures that every athlete moves from the treatment table back to the field with greater resilience and a reduced risk of future setbacks.

From Frustration to Fast-Track

Why Pretoria’s Athletes Trust Well Health Pro for Long-Term Recovery

Stop Playing the “Wait and See” Game with Your Performance

Imagine it’s Saturday morning in Pretoria. The sun is rising over the Bronberg Ridge, and the streets of Garsfontein are alive with the sound of running shoes hitting the pavement and the hum of bicycle tires on the tarmac. For many, this is the best part of the week—the time to push limits, clear the head, and enjoy the competitive spirit of club sports.

But for you, the story is different. You’re on the sidelines, watching your Strava feed fill up with friends’ activities while you nurse a “niggle” that has stubbornly refused to go away. Whether you’re a golfer in Woodhill struggling with a sharp pain in your lead hip, or a cyclist who can’t shake that burning sensation in your lower back, the frustration of being “sidelined” is more than just physical—it’s emotional.

At Well Health Pro, we see this cycle every day. Athletes often fall into the trap of thinking that if they just “give it a few weeks,” the body will magically reset itself. But here is the reality: resting an injury without a proactive rehabilitation plan is rarely the answer. In fact, passive rest often leads to a dangerous cycle of muscle atrophy, joint stiffness, and “secondary” injuries as your body desperately tries to compensate for the original weakness.

The Real Cost of “Just Resting”: South African Sports Insights

In South Africa, our sporting culture is defined by intensity. Whether it’s a high-stakes “vriendskaplike” rugby match or a grueling marathon, we play hard. However, research into local sports medicine reveals a concerning trend: South Africans are world-class at training, but we often lag behind in scientific recovery.

Consider the deeper implications of these findings:

  • The Recurrence Trap: South African sports medicine studies indicate that nearly 30% of amateur athletes experience a recurrence of the same injury within six months. This isn’t bad luck; it’s the result of treating the pain (the symptom) without addressing the pathology (the cause). If your glutes are weak, your knee will keep hurting no matter how much you rest it.
  • The “Pro” Advantage: In the high-stakes environments of the Currie Cup or United Rugby Championship—where our team spent over 4 years—treatment begins within 24 hours. This “Early Intervention Model” is proven to reduce total recovery time by up to 40%. By increasing blood flow and managing inflammation immediately, pros return to the field while amateurs are still waiting for the swelling to “go down on its own.”
  • The Mobility Gap & Longevity: Chronic neglect of sports injuries is a leading contributor to early-onset osteoarthritis in South African adults. We see former rugby and netball players in their 40s with the joints of 70-year-olds, simply because they “played through the pain” or relied on painkillers instead of corrective physiotherapy.

Our 360-Degree Approach to Your Recovery

At our Pretoria clinics in Garsfontein & Lynnwood, we don’t believe in “one-size-fits-all” templates. We treat the athlete, not just the injury. Our approach at Well Health Pro is built on a comprehensive suite of services that bridge the gap between “pain-free” and “performance-ready.”

1. Sports Injury Treatment & Rehabilitation: The Science of Loading

Generic advice like “stop running for a month” is easy to give but hard to follow. Our targeted treatment begins with a forensic-level identification of the damage—be it muscle, tendon, ligament, or bone.

We utilize Progressive Loading protocols. This means we find the exact “threshold” where your tissue can work without further damage. We then systematically increase that load, ensuring that by the time you return to full-speed sport, your injured limb is actually stronger than it was before the injury. Whether it’s a Grade 2 hamstring tear or a complex ankle syndesmosis, we guide you through the healing trajectory with objective milestones.

2. Deep Tissue Sports Massage & Myofascial Release: Breaking the Cycle of Tension

Training for events like the Comrades or the 94.7 Ride Joburg puts immense strain on your soft tissues. Over time, “micro-traumas” lead to adhesions—small areas of scar tissue that make your muscles feel like knotted rope.

Our deep tissue techniques and myofascial release are not “spa treatments.” They are clinical interventions designed to mechanically break down these adhesions, improve lymphatic drainage, and reset the nervous system’s perception of pain. For the athlete on a tight deadline, this is essential for restoring the “slide and glide” of muscle fibers, allowing for a full, fluid range of motion.

3. Movement Pattern Retraining: Fixing the “Why”

Why did your Achilles tendon flare up after five kilometers? It’s rarely just about the shoes. Often, it’s a biomechanical “glitch”—perhaps your hip drops during your stride, or your mid-foot collapses under load.

We use customized movement retraining to correct these harmful imbalances. By focusing on neuromuscular control, we teach your brain how to fire the right muscles at the right time. This is the difference between a temporary fix and a permanent solution. We address the root cause, ensuring that your joint pain doesn’t just disappear—it stays gone.

4. Specialized Care for Rugby, Netball & Athletics

Each sport places unique demands on the human body.

Rugby: Having worked at the professional level, we understand the high-impact trauma involved in tackles and rucks. We focus on neck stability, shoulder integrity, and explosive power.

Netball: This sport is notorious for ACL and ankle injuries due to sudden “stop-and-pivot” movements. Our programs focus on landing mechanics and proprioception.

Running & Athletics: We analyze the repetitive stress of the gait cycle, focusing on “tendon health” and energy return.

5. Preventative Sports Taping & Strapping: Confidence in Motion

The first few weeks of returning to sport are often more of a mental challenge than a physical one. You’re constantly waiting for that “twinge.”

Our expert strapping provides the mechanical support your joints need during this vulnerable phase. However, we go a step further: we empower you. We teach our patients practical self-strapping techniques, using high-quality zinc oxide or kinesiology tape, so you can step onto the field or court with the confidence that your body is supported and protected.

6. Muscle Strengthening & Resistance: Your Best Insurance Policy

In sports medicine, “strength is armor.” If your muscles are weak, your joints take the impact. Our tailored programs use resistance bands, weights, and isometric holds to rebuild the structures surrounding your injury.

Crucially, we advocate for “Relative Rest.” Instead of stopping all activity, we keep you as fit and active as your injury allows. If your ankle is hurt, we work on your core and upper body. This ensures that when your ankle is healed, the rest of your body is ready to go—you won’t be starting from zero.
